Village sign from The Green Man pub website: www.thegreenmantoppesfield.co.uk |
One of my other findings has been two censuses of Toppesfield, taken in 1801 and 1811, and contained in the back of the burial register, so I thought I'd transcribe them for anyone looking for their Toppesfield ancestors. Censuses were taken in those years, but they were supposed to be a population schedule only -- just the numbers of males and females in each village -- but Gilbert Malcolm, Curate of Toppesfield, also gave the names of the heads of households, and the occupations: a real treat for the researcher!
